OpenStack Quick User Guide

In order to access the dashboard of openstack you must first connect to the Rosalind VPN. After that open a web browser and go to Rosalind Openstack Dashboard. Login using your university credentials. At the top, close to the left-side corner, you will see the project/tenancy name you are currently accessing. The default project you are accessing has the same name as your username. In the main screen, you an overview of the resources available/occupied in your project.

Setting network and security infrastructure

This need to be done only once when a project is created:

  • On the left side menu(under “Project”) click on “Network” and “Network Topology”;
  • You can see the two networks available to you: “public” and “shared”;
  • Click on the left, the button “Create Network”;
  • Give a name for your network in “Network Name” and click “Next”;
  • Give a name for your subnet in “Subnet Name”, then in “Network Address” write “192.168.99.0/24” and click “Next”;
  • In “DNS Name Server” write 8.8.8.8 and click “Create”;
  • Now you will see the new network in the Network topology;
  • Click on the left, the button “Create Router”;
  • Give a name for your router in “Router Name” and click “Create Router”;
  • On the left side menu(under “Project”) click on “Routers” and click in the Router you created;
  • Click on “Set Gateway” button on the left;
  • Select “public” in “External Network” options and then click “Set Gateway”;
  • Click “Add Interface” and then in “Subnet” select the subnet that you created before. Click “Add Interface” to finish;
  • Check your final network configuration in the Network topology;
Setting up security(firewall) rules
  • On the left side menu(under “Project”) click on “Compute” and “Access & Security”;
  • In “Security Groups” tab, click the “Manage Rules” of the default security group.
  • Click “Add Rule” on the right and choose “All ICMP” in the “Rule” dropdown menu and hit Add(without changing anything else);
  • Click “Add Rule” on the right and choose “SSH” in the “Rule” dropdown menu and hit Add;
Setting up a Key pair
  • On the left side menu(under “Project”) click on “Compute” and “Access & Security”;
  • On the “Key Pairs” tab click the “Create Key Pair”;
  • Give a name for your key pair in “Key Pair Name” and click “Create Key Pair”;
  • The key will be downloaded automatically for usage;

Launch a VM instance

  • On the left side menu(under “Project”) click on “Compute” and “Instances” and then “Launch Instance” at the right side corner;
  • Give a name for your instance in “Instance Name”;
  • Choose a flavour from the available ones in order to match your requirements. Check the flavour details;
  • Select the “Instance Boot Source” to be “Boot from image”. From the newly appeared “Image Name” drop menu, choose your preferetion in OS;
  • In “Access & Security” tab choose the key pair you created before;
  • In “Networking” tab ,in the “Available Networks”, click + in the network you created before;
  • Finally, click Launch and your instance is in Running state;
  • On the right, click “Associate Floating IP Address” after clicking on the drop down menu;
  • In “IP Address” click + and after choosing “public” in “Pool” drop down menu hit “Allocate IP” And Then Associate;
  • Now you can see the new public address in the “IP Address” column, which will be something like 10.200.xxx.xxx;

Accessing your VM instance

  • In order to access it you must be always be logged in in the Rosalind VPN;
  • You can ping the aforementioned IP address;
  • Use ssh and the downloaded keypair to login: ssh -i keypair.pem user@10.200.xxx.xxx
